| Interviewer: | What's the new single, Undercover Martyn, about? |
| Alex: | It's about leaving school. Wee had no security or plans other than to become a successful band, so that song spurred us on. |
| Interviewer: | You've been described as an 'under the radar hit'- what are the highs and lows of being in that position? |
| Alex: | Radio wouldn't play us and magazines didn't want to write about us. It was upsetting at first because we felt no one was interested in us. Then we realised how quickly or fanbase was growing. The best thing about it is having the success on our own without media coverage. |
| Interviewer: | What has had the biggest impact on your career so far? |
| Alex: | Doing everything under the radar. It's given us time to build a worldwide fanbase. We've toured the world three times. If we'd been on the radio and in magazines early, maybe we'd have been a flash-in-the-pan, which has happened to a lot of bands in recent times. The fact people found us online or on indie radio means they feel they've discovered us themselves. |
| Interviewer: | Have you played in any obscure countries? |
| Alex: | We played to 3,000 people in South Korea last year. South-East Asia is so far away and foreign to us. We didn't know what music was like over there or what they were into but the shows were great. |
| Interviewer: | What surprised you about North Korea? |
| Alex: | We never thought we'd go there. They'd had festivals before and some people were getting angry about Western bands playing there. It was a bit scary at first. |
| Interviewer: | What's the worst gig that you've ever done? |
| Alex: | We did a show in Castleford and people here just didn't care we were there. No one clapped. Everyone stood their with their backs to us at the bar. |
| Interviewer: | What's the first record you bought? |
| Alex: | The Spice Girls first album. It's embarrassing to say now but I was eight at the time and remember saving up to buy the cassette. |
| Interviewer: | Did it have an influence on your work? |
| Alex: | Everything I grew up with has impacted on the music I make today. I'm very interested in pop music like Girls Aloud and Lady Gaga- that's the music that gets in people's heads. I listen to the songs and try to dissect them to work out what makes them good because obviously we want to make good music too. |
| Interviewer: | What else do you like? |
| Alex: | The Beatles and Bob Dylan were staples in my house growing up. My mum loved the Lighthouse Family- I'm not sure if that was a good influence. |
| Interviewer: | Have you heard your music in any unexpected places? |
| Alex: | I was at a motorway service station queuing up for a coffee and the guy behind me's phone rang, and he had our song 'What You Know' as his ringtone. He didn't know I was there and I tried not to turn around. It was cool but awkward and embarrassing at the same time. |
| Interviewer: | Have you ever been the victim of anti-ginger prejudice? |
| Alex: | Yes. I used to get that a lot because I went to an all-boys school. It's typical teenage taking-the-piss for whatever reason. I've always been quite positive so it’s never affected me. |
| Interviewer: | What can be done to stamp out anti-ginger prejudice? |
| Alex: | I don’t think any sort of prejudice is socially acceptable but because it’s just a hair colour, it doesn’t seem like that bigger deal. I don’t think that little prejudices will ever go away. |
| Interviewer: | What’s the worst job you ever had? |
| Alex: | I worked in a garden centre, which wasn’t too bad. I had to paint a lot of fences and got fired but no-one told me why. |
| Interviewer: | What ambitions have you got? |
| Alex: | We’re working on the second album, which will hopefully be out next year. We want to keep touring, go around the world again, keep selling records and have a long career. |
| Ending: | Undercover Martyn is re-released on August 15. Two Door Cinema Club play Reading and Leeds Festival on August 27 and 28. |

NME tours in GlasgowThis Is Life - Two Door Cinema Club
This is the life
This is the life
This is the life
Then who’d argue?
One year, 5 days
And we’re starting new
Try to make a change
It’s one more thing to do
Because if this is the life
This is the life
This is the life
This is the life
This is the life
Then who’d argue?
